This course surveys organizational theories, and focuses on how the communication processes function in organizational structures.

In this course students will:
Demonstrate an understanding of the major theories and models of organizational communication so students can strategically apply these theories/models to a workplace setting, taking into account ethical considerations.
Demonstrate an understanding of the complex formal/informal as well as internal/external communication processes, which affect decision making, leadership and ethics in organizations.
Demonstrate an understanding of how culture, climate, and socialization process is formed, integrated, changed and taught within an organization, while taking into account ethical considerations.
Demonstrate an understanding how conflict and the management of conflict are impacted by power, perceptions, leadership and ethics within an organization.
Demonstrate an understanding of how communication technology, globalization and diversity and its relationship to change with ethical considerations.

This course is an interactive course. Students are expected to complete assignments prior to class and to contribute their understanding of the materials to class discussion and activities.
Logging into the course does not equate with participation. Participation is evaluated on positive contributions to the functioning of the class in accomplishing its assigned tasks. You can expect to receive a "B" for class participation if you complete participation as required each week within the minimum requirements. You will receive an "A" for participation if you don't miss any opportunities for participation and submit thoughtful answers which demonstrate understanding of the readings and assignments, and constructively participate in class activities.
The instructor will provide more detailed information about the grading criteria in class, and explanations of following assignments can be found in the Content section. Be sure to support concepts, theories and terminology from the text. All written assignments must be typed.
