COM407/BA407/MALC671: Leadership Principles

Course Description

Examines evolution of leadership from a communication theory perspective with a focus on contemporary leadership. Topics include: management versus leadership, gender differences, power and social influence, ethics and values, culture and the key communication competencies of leadership. Requires students to evaluate and enhance personal leadership skills and develop a personal model of leadership.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the differences between leadership and management.
  2. Identify how gender differences impact the ability to lead.
  3. Describe the key communication competencies of leadership.
  4. Discuss how power, motivation and social influence are integrated into the leadership role.
  5. Define diversity and the challenges leaders face when encouraging diversity.
  6. Identify the ethical elements that complicate or impact leadership effectiveness.
  7. Discover the key skills leaders need to implement change initiatives and mitigate crises.
  8. Explain how leaders use technology to lead more effectively.
